Uttarpara – The first ray of renaissance
The first ray of Bengal renaissance illuminated the small municipality of Uttarpara when Joykrishna Mukherjee strongly advocated the postulation of modern education and established an English School with the assistance of the British Government. He also made special effort in the establishment of a public library (presently known as the Joy Krishna public Library). The library, an infinite source of invaluable collection boasts of it's association with the famous personalities like Michael Madhusudan Dutta and Rishi Aurobindo.
